National Milk Bank would love to hear about your breast milk donation experience. If you are interested in sharing your story, please contact the National Milk Bank director for more details.

I can’t say enough about what a positive experience donating my breast milk has been for me. I tell every woman I know who is expecting and /or nursing about the milk bank and how much of a difference it can make. I remember when my first child was born, looking at the sick babies in the NICU and just wanting to help them, I almost felt guilty when I got to take my beautiful, healthy baby home. I knew the first time I saw something about National Milk Bank on a nursing mother’s website that I needed and wanted to do this. Thank you so much for organizing this whole process and for making it so easy for moms to donate!

I could not bring myself to pump and dump so I turned to breast milk donation with the National Milk Bank and I liked what I found. My personal struggles in nursing led to an over-abundance of breast milk, and there are babies who desperately, desperately need it. I see this situation as a unique opportunity for me to make a small difference in someone else’s life. I am so fortunate to have been blessed with two healthy boys, something I can only thank God for. I feel so proud that I can play a small part in another mom having what every mom wants, a healthy baby.

I am a mother of one but pregnant 6 times. I have been through a lot trying to have a successful pregnancy. That is why I know how important it is for a mother to have a healthy a vibrant baby. I finally had a doctor that diagnosed me with a weak cervix. I got pregnant again and at 38 weeks I gave birth to a healthy baby boy! I was ecstatic! After all of my heartache I was able to hold my child for the first time. It is unlike any feeling that I have ever felt. In some cases for women at birth is when the heartache begins. Some babies are born too early or with other issues that demands medical attention. In my case my heartache was up front and I was very stressed throughout my pregnancy.

Once home with my son I wanted to give him the best of the best, and so I breastfed him. It was a little rocky at first but we got through the rough first weeks. After a while I returned to work and would pump three times a day at work to keep up with his demanding appetite. As he got older his appetite changed and food was incorporated in his diet, but my milk supply always stayed high. I had a freezer full of milk and didn't know what to do with it. As most women say, "Breast milk is liquid gold!" I surely felt this way and could not get up the nerve to throw this precious milk out. So I did some research and found National Milk Bank (NMB). Out of all of the milk banks I chose NMB because they seemed the most reliable. Also, I could be in another state and still donate my milk. If I were to use a milk bank for my baby it would be NMB because of all the checks and balances that they perform. As I look at my son and see how precious he is I know that there are many moms out there that want the best for their baby also. That is why I wanted to help. I think that this is a great opportunity for me to help babies in need to thrive. NMB was great in making the process easy. I received all of my materials delivered to my home. The screening process is very thorough and covers all bases to ensure that your baby gets clean and healthy milk. All milk is DNA checked to ensure that the milk is from the actual donor, and the milk is pasteurized before sending it on for the babies to use.

The whole process to me is amazing and I am so proud to be a donating mom. To be able to help another mother enjoy the same joys that I have is great! I know I appreciate the doctor that helped me have a successful pregnancy and now I feel like I can give back to those in need. Breast milk is the best milk for your baby. I believe that it is the best milk when I look at my son and see that he has not been sick and is very hefty and healthy. It is a joy! Thank you NMB for allowing mothers like me give back.

Midway through my journey as a surrogate mother, I decided that I wanted to donate my breast milk. After much searching for a local milk bank in my area with no success, I found Prolacta Bioscience and was sold. The fact that my milk is pasteurized and given to Neonatal Intensive Care Units was what drew me to them. I was put in touch with the National Milk Bank, a milk bank that sends their milk to Prolacta to process. The NMB Director was more than helpful in assisting me with the application and screening process so that I would be ready to donate as soon as the baby was born. I was provided with an electric pump and supplies at no cost and within days of my baby's delivery, was sending off my first donation! The fact that I could ship my milk from my own front door via FedEx made the process virtually effortless. My experience with both The National Milk Bank and Prolacta has been wonderful. I have a deep sense of pride and gratification for the contribution that I have been able to make and I appreciate the companies for providing such a service, not only to donating mothers, but to the babies in need. This experience for me is best summed up in a comment made to me by the NMB courier on a recent phone call who said, "I'll be by to pick up your milk and we'll save some babies!" I love sharing my surrogacy story with others and my milk donation is great "icing on the cake".
